The Safer Roads Initiative–Sierra Leone (SRISL) is a flagship road safety initiative of the Civil Society Movement–Sierra Leone (CSM-SL) and the Grassroots Initiative–Sierra Leone (GI-SL), established to champion safer roads, protect lives, and promote a culture of responsible road use throughout Sierra Leone.
At SRISL, we believe that every life matters and every road crash is preventable. We are driven by the conviction that safer roads are achieved through informed citizens, accountable institutions, and strong partnerships. Our mission is to inspire positive behavioural change, strengthen road safety systems, and advocate for policies that make roads safer for everyone.
We bring together a diverse network of professionals, road safety experts, researchers, transport operators, policymakers, civil society organizations, youth leaders, community groups, the private sector, and development partners to collectively address the country’s road safety challenges. By harnessing knowledge, innovation, and collaboration, we create practical, evidence-based solutions that improve road safety outcomes and save lives.
As a dynamic platform for advocacy, public awareness, research, capacity building, and stakeholder engagement, SRISL works to influence public policy, empower communities, strengthen institutional accountability, and encourage responsible road user behaviour. Our initiatives support national road safety priorities while contributing to global efforts to reduce road traffic injuries and fatalities.
Beyond preventing crashes, we are committed to building a future where safe mobility is accessible to all, where communities actively participate in promoting road safety, and where every journey—whether by foot, bicycle, motorcycle, public transport, or private vehicle—is undertaken with confidence and care.
Together, we are building a culture of road responsibility—creating safer roads, protecting lives, and driving sustainable development for Sierra Leone.

We believe that safer roads begin with

Background Information

Road safety is a shared responsibility, yet road traffic crashes continue to claim thousands of lives and leave many more with life-changing injuries every year. In Sierra Leone, rapid urbanization, increasing motorization, inadequate road safety awareness, unsafe road user behaviour, and inconsistent enforcement of traffic regulations have combined to create significant challenges for road users, communities, and the nation’s development.

Recognizing that these tragedies are preventable, the Safer Roads Initiative–Sierra Leone (SRISL) was established under the umbrella of the Civil Society Movement–Sierra Leone (CSM-SL) and the Grassroots Initiative–Sierra Leone (GI-SL). SRISL was created to serve as a dedicated platform for promoting road safety, influencing positive behavioural change, and mobilizing collective action towards safer roads across the country.

The Initiative brings together civil society organizations, government institutions, transport operators, educational institutions, the private sector, development partners, the media, and local communities to address road safety challenges through advocacy, public education, research, capacity building, and evidence-based policy engagement. By fostering collaboration and accountability among all stakeholders, SRISL seeks to create a road safety culture where every road user understands their responsibility and values human life.

As an advocacy-driven initiative, SRISL is committed to supporting Sierra Leone’s national road safety priorities while contributing to regional and global efforts to reduce road traffic deaths and injuries in line with the United Nations Decade of Action for Road Safety and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Through innovation, partnerships, and community engagement, SRISL envisions a future where safe mobility is a reality for everyone and every journey ends safely.
At SRISL, we believe that safer roads begin with informed people, responsible actions, and strong partnerships. Together, we can build a culture of road responsibility that protects lives today and for generations to come.
